Regrets
We recently took a week away in Melbourne, simply for a change of scenery and to break up the down time between Tully’s surgeries. This was the first time we got to really catch up on the last five months since purchasing the boat.
Given everything that has happened and the mountains of work ahead of us, it’d be easy to think that this was all a big mistake and that the lightning was a sign we shouldn’t continue to move forward…
So, do we regret selling everything and moving onto a sailboat? Quite simply… no! We don’t regret our decisions one bit.
Is it turning out to be harder than expected? Sure.
Are the repairs going to take way longer than we want them to? Absolutely.
Will we be scared out of our minds the next time we’re near a lightning storm on the boat? Don’t even get me started.
If it was easy and comfortable, everyone would do it.
The goal of this whole life change was to stop being slaves to our debts. Without a mortgage, car payments and unnecessary stuff, we’re free from so many of the stressors we had before. Yes, for the time being we have the new stress of a total boat refit, but this isn’t permanent. The true challenge now is trying to keep ourselves occupied between boat projects until we’re ready to get back in the water.
Moving onto the boat was as much about the lifestyle change as it was getting to travel and see the world. We’ve conquered the lifestyle change part and now we just need to be patient about seeing the world. I’m confident, we will get there... someday.
The recurring question that’s given us the most pause is this:
Do you think this (lightning strike) was a sign that you shouldn’t move forward with the boat?
Not more than the 15+ things that fell into place perfectly to allow the boat to happen the way it did. I think back to March and April of this year and it was just kismet. I’d be really disappointed in us if it only took one really bad thing to completely change our minds about the fact that this is an experience we want to have.
We probably have several more months of time in the yard before we’ll be ready to splash again. When we are back in the water, we will run everything like crazy to make sure we find every single thing that was damaged by the lightning before leaving the states. Until then, we stay the course.
Thanks for following along on this wild ride!
