Southbound

We left Brunswick on Oct. 20 and hopped around the corner to a familiar anchorage at St. Simons Island for the work week. St. Simons is a lovely spot and with access to a public dock, we love being able to get off the boat for some daily exercise. The only downfall is the passing pilot boats that throw huge wake at all hours. It’s a tradeoff, for sure.

The following weekend turned out to be a beauty. The ocean settled down remarkably for our first hop south. We left St. Simons in thick fog on Saturday morning and motored our way to Fernandina Beach for a very quick stopover.

After such a beautiful day on lake Atlantic, we decided to take advantage of the calm seas to keep pushing south. We checked out the highly recommended Wicked Bao for dinner and got a quick sleep. We were outside of the St. Mary’s inlet before sunrise and sailed our way down to St. Augustine on Sunday. The wind filled in nicely during the afternoon and we made great time.

Between the weather and waiting for mail to arrive, we have been in St. Augustine longer than anticipated. It’s always a mixed bag of feelings when you’re stuck between enjoying the current destination and longing to get to the next. Admittedly, we regularly look forward to the next trip so much that it puts a damper on appreciating where we are.

We often get frustrated because things rarely line up to make moving on the weekend possible and then we’re stuck for an entire work week until the next opportunity. It takes a conscious effort to remember that a week or two on either side of getting where we want to go doesn’t make a huge difference in the end.

Since we arrived in St. Augustine, we have bumped into some old friends and made some new ones. This community continues to feel smaller and smaller the longer we’re in it. Per usual, we walked every inch of town. We also celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary with an ice cream date, visited the farmer’s market at The Amp and watched all the Christmas lights go up for Night of Lights.

While I hoped a potential hurricane wouldn’t be part of our weather planning in mid-November, it certainly tracks with how this season has gone so far. Fingers crossed Sara is the last one we need to worry about for the year.

It’s looking like we may finally get a weekend weather window and we’re motivated to take advantage of it. We’re excited for the next leg of the journey south to our old stomping grounds and hope to see some familiar Palm Beach/Martin County faces while we’re there.
