SpaceX Action

We never expected to come to the Bahamas and see so much SpaceX activity. Growing up in Florida, rocket launches sort of lost their wow factor a long time ago. Much to our surprise, we have been blown away by the recent launches and mishaps.

While anchored at Staniel Cay in February, we got to see a Falcon 9 rocket pass right overhead while the booster landed on a ship just off the Exuma coast. This was apparently the first time a SpaceX booster landed outside of U.S. jurisdiction. The launch also put more than 20 Starlink satellites into orbit. We had an incredible view of the rocket passing over us.

The even more incredible show was the March 6 launch of the SpaceX Starship.

While live-streaming the launch and looking for the rocket to pass overhead, SpaceX announced they “lost contact” with the vehicle. Moments later, we could see the rocket explode in the sky.

SpaceX called it, “a rapid unscheduled disassembly.”

Debris from the rocket fell in the Exumas, but luckily none of it landed on or near us. "Hit by falling rocket debris" is a square on the sailing bingo card we'd like to leave unchecked.

It was truly incredible to witness first-hand. If you didn’t know about the launch, it would have been easy to assume the apocalypse was here.

Luckily, we all survived to see another day. We will certainly not miss any upcoming SpaceX launches though. Entertainment value so far has been 10/10.
